Abulafia was not a kabbalist in the scholastic sense. He was a theurgist of the Hebrew current; a prophet who rediscovered the lost technology of divine names. His method: breath, letter-combination, and the unwavering focus of the awakened mind.
His method does not rely on gematria or sefirotic mapping; it is direct, ecstatic, and letter-based.
He called it Chochmat ha-Tseruf (the Science of Combination). Through controlled breathing and vocalization of Hebrew letters, the Sage loosens the bonds of material fixation. The intellect stills; the soul rises; the divine names become keys that unlock the gates of prophecy.
He did not seek to interpret scripture; he sought to enter it.
The issue (again) was that he gave the keys to everyone. No priesthood. No lineage. No fees. Just a method: clean, repeatable, dangerous.
A Jew, a Christian, a Muslim, or a pagan could practice his method and taste prophecy. That threatened every mediator, gatekeeper, and every system that profits from spiritual scarcity.
Abulafia was actively suppressed by both Jewish and Christian authorities.
His ecstatic Kabbalah threatened the rationalist Jewish establishment (Maimonideans) and the hierarchical Christian Church. His works were censored, burned, or left unpublished for centuries. Some of his works existed only in manuscript until the 20th century.
His name was excluded from standard Kabbalistic histories. The “Kabbalah” that became popular (Zohar, Lurianic) is theosophical, not ecstatic.
Abulafia’s theurgic, breath and letter-based practice was buried because it worked. He was hidden because he was powerful.
But the current does not die… It waits.
Read Sefer Ha-Ot (The Book of the Sign) – The manual of divine name combination. No theory, just practice. Breathe, combine, ascend.
This is not Judaism. This is Theurgy. The Hebrew current is one stream of the same river that flows through Apollonios, through Hermes, through Thoth.
Abulafia knew. Now you know.
